Abstract

This work contributes to the preservation of plant genetic resources through the inventory and characterization of local vegetable crop seeds in the regions of Dhayet Bendhahoua and Sebseb (Ghardaïa province). The main objective of this study is to identify the locally cultivated plant species and characterize the properties of their seeds in terms of shape, size, color, hardness, and germination rate. Seed samples (tomato, pepper, zucchini, onion, etc.) were collected from local farmers and then analyzed in the laboratory,as the results revealed a wide diversity in the physical characteristics of local seeds, reflecting a good environmental adaptation of these varieties to local climatic conditions. Some seeds stood out for their high germination potential and strong resistance to harsh conditions, making them particularly valuable for sustainable agriculture, and The study recommends preserving these genetic resources through seed conservation programs and encouraging farmers to continue using and exchanging them.
