Abstract

This study aims to assess the quality of raw and treated wastewater in the El Meniaa province by comparing it to national (JORA) and international ( OMS) standards. Physico-chemical and bacteriological analyses were conducted over a five-month period (January to May) on domestic effluents treated by a natural lagoon-based biological treatment plant serving the municipalities of Meniaa and Hassi El Gara. The results indicate compliance with parameters such as temperature, pH, nitrites, nitrates, and phosphorus. However, BOD₅ (39 mg/L) and suspended solids (42.8 mg/L) exceed the permissible limits. Removal efficiencies reached 53.4% for BOD₅, 47.5% for COD, 53% for suspended solids, and over 98% for coliforms. These findings suggest partial treatment effectiveness, highlighting the need for further improvements to ensure compliant discharge and support the sustainable reuse of treated wastewater.
