Abstract

During the Ottoman era, southern Algeria knew the influx of a number of Maghreb travelers in order to perform the Hajj pilgrimage, and when they visited some cities and metropolises, they left us a picture of the various conditions prevailing in that period in terms of economic, cultural, social aspects. This study aims to present the most important metropolises, Wargla, Touat, Biskra in the desert caravan trade and to highlight their cultural role in these metropolises. In sum, emphasizing the importance of the role of the strategic location of the desert metropolis in Algeria, which played a prominent role in its economic and cultural prosperity as it represents a link between the north and the south because of its location on the commercial road leading to SudanI. Those cities constitute rest stops for the pilgrimage convoys that pass through it with the aim of resting or supplying goods for trade exchange with the inhabitants of those metropolises.
