    Challenges In Learning Technical English:ACaseStudyOf FirstYear StudentsOf Science And Technology AtThe University Of Ghardaia

    This study attempts to identify the major challenges that university students face in learning technical English in an ESP context. Fifty first year students of science and technology at the University of Ghardaia participated in the study. Data were collected using a questionnaire and classroom observation, and a mixed approach of quantitative and qualitative methods was applied for data analysis. The results of the study demonstrated that students considered the most difficult skill to be speaking, followed by listening, writing and finally reading. They struggled academically with technical vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation and fluency. They also experienced cognitive, motivational and anxiety issues such as concentration, anxiety and motivation.

    An Analysis of ESP learners’ Needs : The case of first year Dentistry studentsat The University of Ghardaia

    This research aims to explore the specific English language needs of first year dentistry students at the University of Ghardaia, with a focus on identifying the language skills required in their academic and professional contexts. English plays a vital role in the field of dentistry, especially in accessing scientific resources, communicating in international settings, and keeping up with global advancements. The study investigates students’ perceptions of English, the challenges they face in learning the language, and their preferences regarding course content and teaching methods. A descriptive research design was adopted, using a quantitative approach based on a questionnaire administered to 21 dentistry students. The results reveal that most students consider English important for their future careers, particularly in tasks related to reading academic materials, communicating with international peers, and attending professional events. However, they face several obstacles, such as limited instructional time and the dominance of French in their coursework especially in the Algerian context. The findings underline the importance of designing a more tailored ESP curriculum that aligns with the real needs of students.Conducting a well-structured Needs Analysis helps teachers and course designers create English courses that are better suited to students’ actual needs. This makes it easier for learners to achieve their academic and professional goals, and to improve their English skills more effectively.

    Investigating the Perceptions and Attitudes of EFL learners towards Business English The Case of the Faculty of Economics students at the University of Ouargla

    English has become a global language and a means of international communication. It is an important language in educational field and future professional jobs. However, English has developed to become the global language for business field. English for specific purposes (ESP) is inherently a student- centered subject. Learners‘ perceptions and attitudes are the fundamental determinants of the learning outcomes of ESP students. This Research shows that the distinction between ‗General English‘ and ESP which the latter focuses on understanding the learners‘ needs. This research carries out a mixed-methods study of 87 management, economics and commerce students at the University of Ouargla with the objective of formulating strategies for improving Business English programs to enhance students‘ employability. The participants‘ perceptions and attitudes regarding the importance of Business English in preparing them for their academic study and the job market, along with a self-assessment of their language needs, were gathered via a 20 -item close-ended questionnaire with students in management and commerce .The results indicate that university students of management and commerce at Ouargla university , are fully aware of their language needs and can make decisions regarding the particular language skills that are needed for their own success in the academic study and the job market. The results also show that students hold very positive attitudes towards Business English and believe that success in the study and career is dependent on proper and adequate Business English provision at the university level.

    Investigating the Necessity of Designing ESP Courses for First-Year Licence Degree Students in the Department of Biology at University of Ghardaia

    As globalization continues to reshape the world, attaining proficiency in the English language has become a sine qua non for professionals and academics across all domains. This has engendered an upsurge in the demand for English for Specific Purposes (ESP) courses which have been implemented at the tertiary level in Algeria. Nonetheless, the efficacy of these courses has been hindered by an insufficiency of pedagogues possessing specialized knowledge in the design of ESP course. This descriptive analytical research study aims to investigate the necessity of designing ESP courses to freshman Biology students at University of Ghardaia during the academic year 2022/2023. It sought to assess the adequacy of the existing courses in addressing the needs and expectations of students as well as to gauge the extent to which instructors adhered to ESP framework in their course construction. To conduct the current research, a triangulated approach was adopted, combining both quantitative and qualitative methods. The data collection process involved the distribution of a questionnaire to a sample of 102 First-Year students to obtain an in-depth understanding of their needs, deficiencies, desires, and satisfaction with the English course they are taking. Additionally, it involved semi-structured interviews with three of their teachers to gain insights through their process of designing their courses. Finally, classroom observations were undertaken to evaluate the implementation of the courses in practice. The study uncovered a significant need for designing and enhancing ESP courses in the Biology department at the University of Ghardaia to effectively cater to the needs and expectations of their students.
