2023) Nada Imane, Benelhadj
Abstract Our study entitled "The Impact of Sociolinguistic Representations and Attitudes on the Learning of Sciences in French: The Case of Biology Students at the University of Ghardaïa" is situated within the socio-didactic framework and aims to examine the representations expressed by learners towards the language and their impact on learning success. In the academic context, there are objective norms regarding the correct usage of French, as well as subjective norms that emerge from social representations, attitudes, and positive or negative stereotypes held by learners. Through the analysis of our sample of learners' opinions, we sought to highlight the factors that fuel and influence these representations, and to study the significance attributed to the French language, as motivations do not arise out of nowhere but within a context of linguistic and social duality that characterizes Them. Our study adopts a qualitative approach, using a questionnaire as a data collection instrument and representations as descriptive tools. The analysis of the collected data allowed us to draw the following results: the majority of the interviewed students have positive representations of the French language, they have an affinity for it, and consider its learning to be useful. However, their linguistic practices do not truly reflect these results, and their attitudes lead to different behaviors depending on the situations.
